What's the deal with Kensington?

Kensington is sort of difficult to characterize. On one hand, there are some very pricey neighborhoods that seem like an extension of Chevy Chase. Then there are some other neighborhoods that seem like an extension of rural West Virginia. If you've gone looking in the area, you will know exactly what I'm talking about. I wonder how the town is run. There are the brave little rows of antique shops, and then there is the Mormon Temple. I don't know the whole story but I'm pretty sure no other jurisdiction wanted to let the LDS build such a monstrosity. The thing is officially within the bounds of Kensington. Not sure I would want to live directly in its shadow.

  1. Yes, Kensington is kind of schizophrenic. The oldest area, around the circle where the old girl's school is, is my favorite. But even there, you have gorgeous old Victorians with huge wrap-around porches next to teeny tiny post war brick boxes. To me, this sums up Montgomery County in general. I don't expect, or want, houses to look all the same in a neighborhood, but I think the basic quality and level of craftmanship should be roughly equal.

Also w/Kensington -- no metro, only MARC. There is, or was, a cute house just off CT. in what I would have called Kensington but what was being billed as North Chevy Chase. I guess a lot of it has to do with what school district you're in.
